Grip sock guide
Grip socks explained: do they work, how should they fit, and which do you need?
Everything you need to know about grip socks for soccer, rugby, ice hockey, field sports, Pilates, yoga, barre and the gym, from the PermagripZ team in Calgary.
What are grip socks?
Grip socks have silicone grip pads on the sole. The grip holds your foot in place against the inside of your footwear, or against the floor or mat when you train barefoot-style in a studio. Less slipping means more control, and more of your power goes into every movement.
Do grip socks actually work?
Yes. In normal socks your foot can slide a little inside your footwear every time you stop, turn or push off. Grip socks cut that movement down, so you:
- change direction faster and feel more stable
- get fewer blisters, because there is less rubbing
- feel more connected to your footwear, the ball and the ground
Can you wear grip socks with soccer cleats?
Yes, and that's where most players start. Wear your grip socks on your feet and pull your team socks or sock sleeves over the top for the full kit look. Check your league's kit rules on sock colour; custom grip socks in your club colours sort that out.
Grip socks for rugby and field sports
Rugby, field hockey, lacrosse, ultimate and Gaelic football all involve hard cuts, sprints and stops on grass or turf. Grip socks keep your foot planted inside your footwear for all of them, even on long tournament days.
Do grip socks work inside ice hockey skates?
Grip socks help stop your foot moving inside the skate, so every stride and push goes into the ice. A snug fit matters most in skates, so try your grip socks at practice first to get the feel right before a game.
Grip socks for Pilates, yoga and barre
Many studios ask clients to wear grip socks for hygiene and safety on reformers and mats. The grip stops you sliding on the reformer platform or mat, so you can hold positions with control. Studios can also order their own branded grip socks to sell or give to clients.
How should grip socks fit?
Snug, with no bunching under the foot, and with the heel sitting in the heel of the sock. If you are between sizes, pick the size that fits closer to your shoe size. PermagripZ sizes:
| Size | Fits |
|---|---|
| Small | Youth 12–4 / Women's 3–5 |
| Medium | Youth 4–8 / Women's 6–10 / Men's 4–8 |
| Large | Women's 11–14 / Men's 8–12+ |
What are PermagripZ grip socks made of?
80% cotton, 17% nylon and 3% spandex, with a cushioned sole, an arch support band and a breathable mesh top.
How do you wash grip socks?
Turn them inside out, wash cool and let them air dry. Heat from the dryer wears the silicone grip down faster.
